The Elan was produced by Lotus Between 1962 and 1975 as a range of 2 seater sports cars available in coupe or convertible form.
Using Colin Chapman’s obsession with weight and a twin cam engine built in house by engineers than later went on to found Cosworth and based on Ford’s Crossflow engine (the lotus version was later purchased by ford and became the Lotus-Ford Twin Cam) the 608KG elan became highly coveted by sports car fans around the world. Maclaren F1 designed Gordon Murray even said “the only disappointment of the F1 was that we could not give it the perfect steering feel of an Elan”
Dubbed as Lotus’ first commercial success the Elan went through changes and alterations over the years until the S4 was launched in 1968 with the larger 1600cc engine as well as cosmetic changes.
